BROWN’S SUMMIT, N.C. – Gabriela Lopez and Emily Tubert shot second round 71s leading the sixth-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team up one spot into second place after second round action at Bryan National Collegiate in Brown’s Summit, N.C., Saturday.

Arkansas finished with a field-best one-over 289 shaving five strokes off of yesterday’s score and is in the clubhouse with a 583.  The Razorbacks trail No. 15 Virginia who is nine-strokes better with 574.  The Razorback’s 289 was three-better than the next team score.

“It was just a really great group effort today,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said.  “They were hungry to come out and improve on yesterday and they came out with a more of an attack mindset and we did a good job of getting us back in the hunt.

“Emily hung in there to finish at one-under and for Gaby to just continue to play well is great to see,” Estes-Taylor continued.  “The way Regina (Plasencia) played today was great as well.  Her score was big for us.  Our two freshmen are really doing a great job for us this week.   Overall, it was an entire team effort.  All five of them fought really hard for every shot and put us in a position to commit to our process and hit one shot at a time.  Tomorrow we’ll go out and give it all we’ve got.”

Lopez and Tubert’s 71s were tied for the third best round on the day and both players moved up several spots on the leaderboard.  Lopez is tied for third with 143 (72-71) and she is just three strokes back of the leader.

Lopez opened the day on the first tee box and birdied her first hole.  She would then shot eight consecutive pars to turn one-under.  Lopez picked up the second of her three birdies on the 10th hole moving to two-under, where she would stay until the 14th hole.  Lopez finished with two bogeys and a birdie to finish at one-under.

Tubert moved up 10 spots from a tie for 15th into a tie for fifth with a 144 (73-71).  The Burbank, Calif., native turned plus-one and rallied on the second nine.  Tubert posted back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes moving one-under which is how she would finish.

Plasencia moved into a tie for 20th overall with a 148.  Plasencia has rounds of 75-73.  Senior Victoria Vela is tied for 27th overall with rounds of 74-75 and junior Emma Lavy is tied for 47th with a 152 shooting 78-74 this weekend.

The Razorbacks have a three stroke lead over No. 7 Vanderbilt who is third with 586.  The Southeastern Conference is well-represented with No. 19 Georgia in fourth with 594 and NO. 43 Auburn in fifth with 595.  The rest of the field includes No. 46 Wake Forest and No. 5 Florida with 596, No. 23 North Carolina State, No. 9 North Carolina and No. 47 South Carolina tied for eighth with 597, No. 26 Michigan State with 600, No. 2 Duke with 604, No. 42 Florida State and Louisville with 609, No. 30 Tennessee with 610, UNC-Wilmington with 621 and UNC-Greensboro with 622.

Play concludes with a final round Sunday in the final event before the SEC Championship.

“We are looking forward to the opportunity to play tomorrow,” Estes-Taylor said.  “Conditions are supposed to be a little rainy and it’s always good to have tough conditions when you are trying to make up a deficit and we look forward to making it happen.”
