BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Arkansas sophomore Gabriela Lopez powered her way through the 2014 Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championships finishing tied for second overall and leading the No. 4 Razorbacks to a third-place finish at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Ala., Sunday.

Lopez’s runner-up finish is second only to former Razorback Stacy Lewis who won the SEC title twice, first as a freshman in 2005 and again as a senior in 2008.  It is the best finish by an Arkansas sophomore at the SEC Championship in two seasons.

Lopez opened the weekend Friday with a one-over 73.  The front nine gave her fits in the first round as the Mexico City, Mexico, native was two-over with four bogeys to start off tournament play.  Lopez rallied on day one with three birdies, including two in the final three holes, to count her 73.

The second round was even better despite the tough conditions.  A rain-soaked golf course, and delayed the start but Lopez didn’t mind as she played the first nine even in the second round.  She maintained that consistency and was again even on the back nine with a two bogeys and two birdies for the day.

In her final round, Lopez began the day with 10 consecutive par holes before moving to one-under with a birdie on the 11th hole.  She gave it back on 13 with a double but finished strong with a birdie on the 18th green for a 72.  Lopez shot 73-72-72=217 for the weekend.

As a team, Arkansas posted a final round 301 and finished third with an 892, 13 strokes back of the winner.  Senior Emily Tubert tied for 10th overall with rounds of 73-73-76=222 and sophomore Regina Plasencia tied for 19th overall shooting 72-75-79=226.  Senior Emma Lavy tied for 53rd overall shooting 76-77-81=234 and freshman Summar Roachelle tied for 58th with 79-82-74=235.

“We didn’t get the team result we hoped for this weekend,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said, “but I’m so proud of the way we finished.  We have such a great group of players and it was a joy to lead them around the course this weekend.”

Surprise winner Vanderbilt posted a six-over 294 in the final round to get the win with an 879.  Sixth-ranked South Carolina finished second with 890, followed by No. 4 Arkansas with 892.  Seventh-ranked Alabama was fourth with 896 followed by No. 16 LSU with 898, No. 22 Auburn with 900, No. 36 Texas A&M with 908, No. 52 Georgia and No. 30 Kentucky tied for eighth with 909, Missouri and No. 19 Florida tied for 10th with 913, No. 29 Mississippi State posted 918, Tennessee with 921 and Ole Miss with 925.

The @RazorbackWGolf team returns to action May 8-10 in NCAA Regional action
