Razorbacks fall in close match at Tennessee, 4-2

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 50 University of Arkansas women's tennis team dropped a tight match on the road, falling to No. 28 Tennessee 4-2. The loss drops Arkansas to 10-13, and 3-8 in SEC play, while the Lady Vols improve to 9-8, 6-4 SEC. 

"We got off to a good start with doubles," Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty said. "We just couldn't get it done in singles. Now we have to move forward and get ready for Georgia on Sunday."

In doubles, Arkansas used a late comeback to clinch the point. The Lady Volunteers went ahead with a win by the No. 3 doubles team in the nation, as Brynn Boern and Kata Szekely defeated No. 74 Claudine Paulson and Segou Jonker 8-4. The Razorbacks rallied back, winning at No. 2 and No. 3. Kimberley - Ann Surin and Ana Lorena Belmar Hernandez won 8-6 over UT's Williams and Grace to even it up. Yang Pang and Brittany Huxley also won 8-6, defeating Fotopoulos and Toti to clinch the doubles point. 

Tennessee got back in the lead 2-1, as Belmar Hernandez and Sarah McLean both fell in straight sets. Belmar Hernandez fell to Tiffany Tavares 6-3, 6-4, and McLean lost to Mimi Fotopoulos 6-2, 6-2. 

Arkansas tied the match up at 2 with a big ranked win from senior Claudine Paulson, defeating her third ranked opponent of the year. No. 97 Paulson knocked off No. 38 Kata Szekely in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Tennessee finished the match with two straight wins, clinching the victory at 4-2. No. 47 Yang Pang lost in straight sets to No. 21 Brynn Boren, 6-4, 7-5. Kimberley - Ann Surin took her first set, but lost to Caitlyn Williams 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. 

No. 6 singles was suspended when UT clinched the victory. Arkansas freshman Brittany Huxley was leading at the time against Jesse Grace, 7-6, 3-6, 5-1. 

Arkansas is on the road again on Sunday, facing No. 3 Georgia. First serve is at 1 p.m. CST.
