STARKVILLE, Miss. – The No. 50 University of Arkansas women’s tennis team dropped a close match at the SEC Tournament. An intense dual with the No. 19 Tigers came down to the final match, with the Razorbacks coming just short in a 4-3 loss.
“I thought we played our best match of the season,” Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty said. “It came down to the very end, and credit to Auburn for getting it done. For such a young team to play such a good match at the SEC Tournament is a great sign of things to come.”
In doubles, the Razorbacks got off to a great start as their No. 3 duo of Kimberley – Ann Surin and Ana Lorena Belmar Hernandez cruised to an 8-0 victory over Auburn’s Pfeifler and Schippers. Two close matches followed, and the Tigers were able to get victories at both spots to earn the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Arkansas No. 72 pair of Claudine and Paulson and Segou Jonker battled with No. 11 Pleun Burgmans and Plamena Kureva 9-7 as Auburn evened up doubles. Shortly after, Yang Pang and Brittany Huxley fell in a tight match 8-6 to Emily Flickinger and Jackie Kasler.
In singles, freshman Ana Lorena Belmar Hernandez got the Razorbacks off to a good start with a victory in straight sets. Belmar Hernandez defeated Plamena Kurteva 6-2, 6-3 to tie the match at 1-1. Auburn came back to take the next point, going up with a straight set victory at No. 5 singles, as Brittany Huxley fell to Jackie Kasler 6-4, 6-3.
Two Razorback matches went to third sets in tight contests. Freshman Kimberley – Ann Surin dropped the first set 6-0, but rallied to win the second set 6-4 against Jen Pfeifler. Surin was able to complete the comeback, storming back for a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Senior Claudine Paulson also played an intense three set match. Paulson took the first set 6-2, but then dropped the second set 6-0. In the third set, Paulson pulled away, and won the match 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 to put Arkansas ahead 3-2.
The match came down to two final matches, with freshman Yang Pang at No. 1 and sophomore Sarah McLean at No. 3. No. 42 Pang fell in straight sets to No. 23 Burgmans, 6-4, 6-3, and the match was even at 3-3.
The match would come down to Sarah McLean versus Michala Kucharova at No. 3 singles in an intense duel. McLean dropped the first set 7-6 (5) in a tiebreaker, and the second set also went to a tiebreak. McLean fell in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6.
The match ends the Razorbacks' team season at 13-15, with the draw for NCAA individual singles and doubles still to be announced.
"We've certainly come a long way this season," Coach Hegarty said. "It was a really great match and I'm really proud of the team. We did some great things here tonight, and there are a lot of good things are still to come for this squad."
