FAYETTEVILLE - Yang Pang and Kimberley - Ann Surin had not paired up for collegiate doubles competition yet this season. In just one day, they put together a season's worth of work, winning five straight matches against a competitive field and advancing to the finals of the 2013 USTA/ITA Central Regional Championship in Norman, Okla., on Friday.

After thunderstorms forced competition inside on the six indoor courts of the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion, singles matches were scratched for the day and the entire 64-team doubles draw was to be played.

Pang and Surin went to work.

Beginning the day with 8:30 a.m. warmups, the Razorback duo walked off the courts some 12 hours later, able to claim five straight victories and a berth in the tournament finals as a day's work.

The two look to finish off their remarkable run when they return to the court and face Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie of host team Oklahoma for the tournament title on Monday, after the final was moved back on mutual coaches' decision.

"That's a really tall task to be able to win five doubles matches in one day," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "I don't think I've ever seen it done before. Credit both our team and the Sooner team for finding a way to get through a 64-team draw down to two teams in one day. It should be a great final."

The day began with a forecast as bleak as the one outside, as Pang and Surin were down match point in the first round against Anita Lee and Meagan Monaghan of Southern Illinois University. The two would rally, however, battling back to grit out an 8-7 (2) victory to move on.

Riding the momentum of their first-round turnaround, Pang and Surin never looked back and went on to win four straight matches over the course of the day, bringing the total to five wins. The stretch included battling back in the third round while trailing in the third set to Wofford/Melrose of host team Oklahoma and then later defeating another pair of Sooners in the semifinals, topping Brhane/Engbroks, 8-6.

With the performance, Surin improved to 9-2 individually in doubles play this fall season. The sophomore from Montreal, Canada, had also paired up with teammate Flavia Araujo to go 4-2.

Pang also saw her individual doubles record improve to 7-2 this fall season.

Both Pang and Surin, along with teammate Sarah McLean, get right back to work 9 a.m. on Saturday as singles play gets underway at the ITA Central Regional championship.
