FAYETTEVILLE - Yang Pang and Kimberley - Ann Surin concluded play at the 2013 USTA/ITA Central Regional Championship on Monday, as the pair finished runner-up in the doubles final at the tournament held in Norman, Okla.
Facing seniors Whitney Ritchie and Mia Lancaster of host team Oklahoma, the sophomore Razorback duo was defeated, 8-4, inside the Headington Family Tennis Center.
"To get within one match of the National Indoor event is a great credit to Kim and Nicky," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "It was two sophomores against two seniors today. You have to give credit to the Sooner pair who were flawless all the way through."
Just their first time pairing for doubles play this season, Pang and Surin combined for a 5-1 record on the weekend, running off five straight wins last Friday to reach the tournament final. Pang also advanced to the Sweet 16 of the singles main draw before falling on Sunday to senior Kanyapat Narattana of Oklahoma State, 6-4, 6-1.
Both singles and doubles champions from each regional earn a berth in the upcoming USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 7-10.
Arkansas resumes its fall season schedule when it travels to the Houston Cougar Invitational in Houston, Nov. 1-3.
