OUTLOOK: After receiving a medical redshirt due to a hand injury early in 2008, Smith went through his first full spring in Fayetteville. He is listed behind Jerry Franklin on the post-spring depth chart at linebacker. He recorded three tackles in the Red-White Spring Game and at least a pair of tackles in every other scrimmage throughout the spring.

2008: He started the first two games and had impressive showings as a true freshman at weakside linebacker before suffering a season-ending hand injury against Louisiana-Monroe. In two games, he recorded eight tackles, one for a loss, one pass breakup and one forced fumble. He had five tackles, one tackle for a loss, one pass breakup and one forced fumble in the first game of his career against Western Illinois.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Despite missing two games during his senior season, he totaled 109 tackles, including 61 unassisted stops, six tackles for loss and one sack for Coach Robert Toomer. During his junior season at Abbeville HS in Louisiana, he recorded 135 tackles and two sacks. He was a first-team all-district honoree. As a sophomore, he racked up 108 tackles. As an inside linebacker, he was ranked No. 38 in the nation at his position and the No. 35 overall prospect in the state of Louisiana by Rivals. He was rated No. 44 at the weak side linebacker position and the No. 33 overall prospect in his state by Scout. He was also recruited by Georgia, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

PERSONAL: Born June 26, 1990, he is the son of Jean and Lonnie Smith. He is enrolled in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.
