On Wednesday October 13, 2004, some of the Gym’Backs piled into a few cars and drove out to the Boys and Girls Club. We didn’t really know what to expect when we got there, but we were welcomed graciously into the vicinity, and ushered to a small gym. The new club was absolutely beautiful, with hallways full of artwork and color. It seemed like a very nice place for a child to spend his or her afternoon. When the children starting coming in with bright smiles, we couldn’t help but smile as well. After introducing ourselves, we did a short demonstration on each of theevents. As they all oohhed and aahhed at the minimal amount of gymnastics we actually performed, we told them thatthey were going to get to do some too! Every single one of them was thrilled, even the older kids who at first thought the whole idea was a little too childish for them. By the end of the hour, we had everyone doing something. Jumping on trampoline withKatie, going over the vault, doing skin the cats with Hannah on the bars, and even some attempting forward rolls with me on the beam. It really was heartwarming to see how happy they all were. For some, it was their first time doing any gymnastics while others flew through it like pros. All in all, it was a very nice way to spend an afternoon, and hopefully we will be going back soon!
