Alters Added to Swimming & Diving Staff

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Razorback swimming and diving head coach Neil Harper has announced the addition of Mitchell Alters as a graduate assistant to the 2016-17 staff. Alters joins the Razorbacks after wrapping up his collegiate swimming career at Oakland University.

“I have known Mitch for a long time and I am very excited about his addition to our staff,” said Coach Harper. “His collegiate and club swimming career has had him work with some great coaches all over the Midwest. His experience will bring another dynamic to our comprehensive staff.”

The North Canton, Ohio native was a part of a team that won four consecutive conference championships. He held the fastest 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly times for the Golden Grizzlies last season. His 200 butterfly time (one minute, 47.91 seconds) was good enough for a second place finish in the Horizon League.

During Alters’ junior year, he was the 2015 Horizon League champion in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:47.65, a time that ranks fourth all-time in Oakland team history. He is also fourth in Oakland history in the 400 IM with a time of 3:56.72 at the 2015 Horizon League Championships where he finished fourth in the conference.

In his sophomore season, Alters swam the 500 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 400 IM at the 2014 Horizon League Championships. He recorded a third place finish at the championships in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.37. He earned all-league honors in the Summit League Championships after finishing runner-up in the 400 IM and 200 butterfly during his freshman year.

Coming out of high school, he was a two-time All-American (2010 and 2011), four-year letter winner, three-time All-state and All-county selection and a member of three consecutive league championships at Hoover High School. During his junior and senior seasons, he was named the Stark County Swimmer of the Year.

Out of the pool, Alters was just as impressive. During his senior year at Oakland, he was named a Scholar All-American by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America. He was also a Horizon League Winter Academic All-League selection his final two seasons and named to the Horizon League Fall Honor Roll during the 2013, 2014 and 2015 years.

Alters will be enrolled in the College of Education and Health Professions working toward his master’s degree in sports management.
