Altman Returning to Creighton as Basketball Coach

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Dana Altman, hired to be the basketball coach at Arkansas on Monday, has decided to remain the head coach at Creighton University, he announced Tuesday afternoon.

Altman, from Wilber, Neb., has been the head coach at the Omaha, Neb., school for the past 13 seasons.

Altman met with Arkansas Chancellor Dr. John White Tuesday afternoon before citing family issues and his loyalty to Creighton as reasons for returning. He also said he spoke with Creighton officials earlier in the afternoon and was assured he would be allowed to return.

Arkansas will hire a national search firm and begin the search for a replacement immediately.

Following is a statement from Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles:

“I am disappointed that Coach Altman has decided to return to Creighton University. He put 13 years into that program and leaving his home state proved more difficult than he could have imagined. I have already been in contact with Chancellor White regarding the resumption of the coaching search. I am confident that we will find the right coach for this program. Our players and the Razorback fans deserve a coach committed to returning our basketball program to sustained success at the highest level.”
