Alvarez is SEC Defensive Player of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE – Christa Alvarez, a member of the University of Arkansas volleyball team, has been recognized as the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week as announced Monday by the league office. The freshman libero had a team-high 36 total digs in two matches, good for 6.00 digs per set. The figure is more than two and half digs higher than her season average.

In the Razorbacks’ match against Ole Miss, Alvarez had a match-high 19 digs to go along with three assists and a service ace. In the second set, Arkansas totaled 31 digs including 11 from Alvarez. Against Alabama, she once again led all players with 17 digs and registered a career-high seven assists. She was part of a Razorback defense that held the Crimson Tide to a .121 hitting percentage.

Aside from her defensive efforts, Alvarez helped set the table for the Arkansas offense. As a primary passer, she had no reception errors in 30 attempts and helped start the team’s offense which posted a .289 hitting percentage during the weekend. The Razorbacks hit .313 in their weekend finale against Alabama. Alvarez is currently ninth in the SEC with 3.49 digs per set and 10th with 0.25 service aces per set.

The Katy, Texas, native is the third Razorback honored this season by the SEC. She is the second player on the team this year to be named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week, joining Kelli Stipanovich who was selected Oct. 10. Last week, Jasmine Norton earned SEC Player of the Week accolades. Alvarez is the seventh player in program history to earn SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

For the first time since the 2006 season, Arkansas used a pair of 3-0 wins to sweep an SEC weekend. It was the third overall conference weekend sweep under head coach Robert Pulliza. With Sunday’s win over the Crimson Tide, Arkansas equaled its win total from last season.

The Razorbacks return to the court Wednesday night for a midweek contest against LSU. First serve of the Western Division matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT) at Barnhill Arena. The match will be televised by ESPNU with Adam Amin and Elizabeth Moreau handling the commentary duties.
