FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. – Arkansas sophomore Andrew Wishy was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VI Baseball Team after posting a 3.79 overall grade point average.
A native of Raytown, Mo., Wishy was tabbed as the designated hitter on the academic squad and is majoring in music. Wishy is now a candidate for the Verizon Academic All-America Team which will be selected later this season.
“Andrew has worked very hard in the classroom and this a tremendous reward for his efforts,” Arkansas baseball head coach Norm DeBriyn said. “He has done a good job on and off the field. He brings a great work ethic and attitude and is a valuable member to our team.”
Wishy is batting .250 this season and has appeared in 42 games with 34 starts primarily as the designated hitter. Wishy has four home runs this year with 22 runs batted in and a .395 on-base percentage. Wishy set a career-best with four RBI against Centenary earlier this season and has three three-hit performances. For his career, Wishy is a .312 hitter with 11 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 43 RBI.
Wishy the and Razorbacks are currently two games out of the race for the SEC Tournament heading into the final two weeks of the season. Arkansas begins a three-game series against the 12th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Oxford.
Arkansas trails Mississippi State for the eighth and final spot in the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs take on the Alabama Crimson Tide this weekend in Tuscaloosa and hold the tie-breaker over the Razorbacks after taking two of three games earlier this year in Starkville.
