Arkansas Accepts Bid To Play Missouri In Indep
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Razorbacks will make their sixth consecutive bowl trip when they take on the Missouri Tigers Wednesday, Dec. 31, in the Mainstay Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La.
The Hogs (8-4) and Tigers (8-4) will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT at Independence Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPN.
“We are all very excited about going to our sixth-straight bowl game,” Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. “This is a great reward for our players, especially our seniors, who worked so hard. This will also be a fun trip for our fans. We are looking forward to playing a very good Missouri team on New Year’s Eve in Shreveport.”
Nutt is just the third coach in Arkansas history to guide the Razorbacks to a bowl game in each of his first six seasons as head coach. Lou Holtz took the Hogs bowling from 1977-82, while Ken Hatfield made is six straight from 1984-1989.
It will be the 34th bowl appearance in Arkansas history and just the second trip to the Independence Bowl. The Razorbacks are 10-20-3 all-time in bowl games including a 0-1 mark in the Independence Bowl.
Arkansas’ first trip to the Independence Bowl came in 1991, the Hogs’ last season as a member of the Southwest Conference. The Razorbacks took on the Georgia Bulldogs that year, losing by a score of 24-15.
This year’s contest in Shreveport marks the fourth meeting between the Razorbacks and Tigers. Missouri holds a 2-1 series lead over the Hogs, but the teams have not played since the 1963 season when Missouri claimed a 7-6 victory in Little Rock.
The teams first met in 1906 in Columbia, Mo., where the Tigers posted an 11-0 win over the Hogs. Arkansas’ only win in the series came in 1944 when the Razorbacks nipped Missouri 7-6 in St. Louis.
