Austin, Texas — The Arkansas Razorbacks fought off a late-inning Bison rally and elimination from the NCAA Austin Regional with an 10-7 victory over fourth-seeded Bucknell Saturday afternoon. The victory moved the Razorbacks into the second game of the loser’s bracket. Arkansas will play the loser of the No. 1 seed Texas vs. No. 3 seed Lamar game at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Arkansas improved to 35-21 overall, while the Bison fell to 27-16 with loss. Bucknell was eliminated from the Austin Regional with the loss to the Razorbacks.
Charley Boyce (6-5) earned the victory for Arkansas. Boyce went seven and one-third innings allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits. Boyce fanned seven and walked three. Jay Sawatski notched his third save of the season after pitching the ninth inning without allowing a base runner.
Zachery Allen (6-3) took the loss for Bucknell after allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits in five innings of work. Allen walked four, hit three batters and struck out five.
Bucknell got on the scoreboard in the second inning after Ben Krentzman reached on a fielding error by Clay Goodwin and moved to third on a single by Phil Bunting. B.J. Batterson moved Bunting to second after he grounded back to Boyce for the second out of the inning.
Ben Stoll brought Krentzman home with a single to shortstop for a 1-0 Bucknell lead.
Arkansas tied the game in the top of the third when Haas Pratt singled up the middle with Kirk McConnell (walk) and Andrew Wishy (hit by pitch) aboard. The single scored McConnell from second and evened the game at 1-1.
Still in the third, the Razorbacks took advantage of a Bucknell error to take the lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Chris Williams hit a ground ball to second that appeared to set up an inning-ending double-play. But, second baseman Sam Moss threw wild to second allowing Wishy and Pratt to score to give the Hogs a 3-1 lead.
The Bison cut the deficit to 3-2 with a solo home run by Brian Hirschberg that cleared the centerfield wall.
The Razorbacks plated a run in the top of the fourth when Nick Pitts hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Scott Bridges (hit by pitch) to score for a 4-2 lead.
Arkansas made it a 5-2 game in the sixth when Bridges hit a bloop double to left that scored Ryan Fox (single) from second. Williams began the inning with a double to left-center, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a passed ball.
Scott Hode gave the Razorbacks a 7-2 lead with a two-run double to left that scored Fox (error) and Bridges (walk). The one-out double was Hode’s first hit of the game.
The Bison plated a run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Krentzman doubled to left to bring home Kyle Walter who singled to right. Bucknell continued to narrow the gap in the eighth when Bunting hit a triple to left-center that Pitts narrowly missed on a diving attempt.
The triple scored Krentzman and Day (single) and cut the Arkansas lead to 8-5. Goodner relieved Boyce and recorded the second out of the inning before giving up a single to Stoll that scored Bunting and cut the Arkansas lead to 8-6.
Following a walk to Moss, Pete Wolf laced a two-out single through the right side to score Stoll and pull Bucknell within a run at 8-7.
With one out in the top of the ninth, Fox hit a two-run double to right-center to score Wishy (walk) and Pratt (single) to give the Hogs a 10-7 cushion.
Sawatski retired the Bison in order in the ninth to seal the victory for Arkansas.
