Arkansas Baseball Downs Louisiana Tech, 5-2

RUSTON, La. – The 23rd-ranked Arkansas baseball team stranded 13 base runners Friday night but took advantage of four Louisiana Tech errors and pounded out 14 hits for a 5-2 win.
The Razorbacks improve to 5-0 on the season with the win in front of 1,837 fans at J.C. Love Field. It was the fourth-largest crowd in Louisiana Tech history and the largest since LSU visited in 1997.
Freshman Nick Schmidt threw five strong innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out four to improve 2-0 on the season.
Daryl Maday came on in the sixth inning and allowed his first base runner of the season on a one-out single by pinch-hitter Ben Tabor. Maday had retired the first 16 hitters of the season prior to Tabor’s single. He would pitch 3.1 innings before exiting with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Maday allowed on hit and one unearned run.
Trey Holloway came on to get the final two outs to earn his second save of the season.
Clint Arnold and Casey Rowlett both went 3 for 5 on the night with an RBI. Jake Dugger, Brian Walker and Scott Hode all collected two hits each for the Hogs.
Arkansas chased Louisiana Tech’s starting pitcher Clayton Meyer in the seventh inning by loading the bases with one out. But reliever Steve Alverson came on and got Clay Goodwin to ground into a double play to end the inning. Meyer (1-2) pitched 6.1 innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on 11 hits while walking one and striking out two.
The Razorbacks finally broke through in the top of the third inning after Arnold and Jake Dugger opened the inning with singles. Casey Rowlett followed with his second hit of the night to plate Arnold. After a sacrifice bunt from the Hogs’ cleanup hitter Blake Parker, Arkansas took a 2-0 lead on a RBI ground out by Clay Goodwin.
Louisiana Tech struck back in the bottom half of the third inning with a run on a ground out by Adam Cobb. The bases were loaded for Cobb, but Goodwin started the double play by getting the force at third base and firing across the diamond to get Cobb at first base.
The Hogs took a 4-1 lead in the eighth inning on three unearned runs.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning on an Albie Goulder’s RBI ground out.
Brian Walker’s RBI single to left field in the top of the ninth inning padded the Arkansas lead to 5-2. The single scored Goodwin, who snapped a 0-for-15 slump with a leadoff infield single.
The Razorbacks and Bulldogs are slated for 1 p.m. start on Saturday for game two of this three game series. The game can be heard on the Razorback Baseball Radio Network.
