Arkansas Caps Home Stand With DH Sweep

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas men’s tennis team wrapped up a seven-match home stand with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday night on the Dills Indoor Courts at the Billingsley Tennis Center, defeating Auburn 4-1 and Saint Louis 6-1.

Arkansas (12-9, 3-4 SEC) lost the doubles point in both matches but won all 10 completed singles matches and led in the other two singles matches when play was stopped after Arkansas clinched the 4-1 win over Auburn. Johan den Toom clinched the win over Auburn, while Adam Sanjurjo provided the clincher against Saint Louis.

Arkansas 4, Auburn 1

Arkansas snapped a four-match losing streak in SEC play, winning four singles matches on the way to a 4-1 win over Auburn (11-9, 2-4 SEC) in the first match of the doubleheader.

Mike Redlicki and Jose Salazar, the No. 37 ranked doubles team in the nation, won a decisive break in the 10th game to defeat Maxime Hinnisdaels and Conner Huertas, ranked No. 18 in the nation, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Auburn won a key 40-40 point to break and lead 6-5 and then held serve for the 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point.

Salazar, the No. 26 player in the nation, was the first off the court in singles, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles Juan Marino followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles. Redlicki, the No. 10 player in the nation, won a ranked matchup, defeating Hinnisdaels, the No. 67 player in the nation, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

Johan den Toom, after Auburn saved two match point, clinched the match on a 40-40 point in the 10th game of the second set, winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Oscar Mesquida was also serving for the match, leading 6-4, 5-4 at No. 4 singles, and Adam Sanjurjo led 7-5, 2-2 at No. 3 singles when play was stopped after the match was clinched.

Arkansas 6, Saint Louis 1

After dropping the doubles point on an 18-point tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, Arkansas rolled to six straight-set wins in singles play for the 6-1 win over Saint Louis (7-8) in the second match of the doubleheader.

Juan Marino evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, and then Oscar Mesquida followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles and Branch Terrell finished off a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. Adam Sanjurjo clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.

With the match already clinched, Johan den Toom closed out a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, and then No. 26 Jose Salazar capped the night with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles for the 6-1 final.

Arkansas will play its next three matches on the road against SEC competition, traveling to LSU (March 31), No. 8 Texas A&M (April 2) and Ole Miss (April 7), before returning home for a quad match against Jackson State on April 9.
