TEMPE, Ariz. – Arkansas juniors Oskar Johansson and Henrik Tofft advanced to the singles’ quarterfinal round of the 1999 Arizona State Thunderbirds Invitational Thursday afternoon.
“It was a good day for Razorback tennis,” head coach Robert Cox said. “I was really proud with Henrik to finally get some good quality wins at a very prestigious tournament. Both of them played extremely well. They looked like true veterans for juniors and they both played like it.”
Tofft defeated Fabien Giraud of Rice in the first round with a score of 6-3, 7-5. The upset of the tourney came with Tofft facing Jeff Laski of Illinois. Laski was the sixth seed in the tournament and is ranked 84th nationally. Tofft defeated Laski in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Tofft will face Stephen Huss of Auburn, Friday afternoon. Huss is ranked 56th in the nation and is the third seed of the tourney.
Second seeded Johansson also advanced to the quarterfinal round. His first opponent of the afternoon was Andy Scorteanu of Fresno State. Johansson won 7-6 (6), 6-1. To advance to the quarterfinals, Johansson defeated Arizona State’s Pim Van Mele 6-1, 6-4. Johansson’s next opponent is Rene Combette from Mississippi State.
Featured as the doubles match of the tournament, the Razorback duo faced off against Pim Van Mele and Matt Jacobs of Arizona State. The Hogs fought till the bitter end, just losing 9-8, with a 7-3 tiebreak.
“They had a tough match in doubles playing a team from Arizona State at home,” Cox said.
The ASU Thunderbird Invitational continues Friday, with play beginning at 1:30 p.m.
