Arkansas Falls in Close One to Tennessee, 4-3

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – In a day full of matches Friday that could have gone either way No. 39 Tennessee (6-2) pulled out a close match against No. 25 Arkansas (8-2), defeating the Razorbacks 4-3 at the UA Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Arkansas took the early advantage in the dual match by winning two of three matches in doubles to go up 1-0. At three doubles, Tennessee’s Wade Orr and Mark Dietrich defeated Arkansas’ Adrians Zguns and Rohan Gajjar, 9-7. Two doubles saw Matt Roberts and Imraan Ismail switch breaks a couple of times with Ockie Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers before winning the match, 9-7. At number one doubles, Nathan Price and Matt Simpson were down 7-4 against Simon Rea and Damien Spizzo before staging a comeback to win in the match in a decisive tiebreaker, 9-8(2).
With Arkansas up 1-0 it headed into singles play looking to pick up three singles matches to win the match. However, Tennessee proved strong as it rallied back from being down in several matches to win 4-3. At number three singles, Damien Spizzo faced Arkansas’ Matt Simpson. Spizzo defeated Simpson, 6-1, 6-4 to tie the match at 1-1. Number one singles saw Arkansas’ Nathan Price, No. 76 in the nation, play Simon Rea, No. 37 in the nation. Rea defeated Price, 6-1, 6-4 to put Tennessee up 2-1. Arkansas would tie the match back up at 2-2 at two singles when Adrians Zguns, No. 12 in the nation, defeated Ockie Oosthuizen, No. 94 in the nation, 6-2, 6-0. At five singles, Matt Roberts faced Mark Dietrich. Roberts jumped up a break early in the first set, but Dietrich battled back to take the set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(5). In the second, Roberts rebounded to take the set, 6-1. Dietrich recovered to get up the early break in the third set to put Roberts away, 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-3 to put Tennessee up 3-2. Tennessee would clinch the match at six singles in a match that saw Arkansas’ Imraan Ismail and Wade Orr faced each other. Ismail won the first set, 6-3 and was up a break in the second set at 4-2 before Orr came back to win the second set, 6-4. In the third set, Orr gained a couple of breaks to hold Ismail off to win the match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. With the match in hand, Arkansas’ Rohan Gajjar and Kiril Tcherveniachki battled at four singles. Tcherveniachki won the first set, 6-3, but Gajjar would even the match at a set a piece after winning the second set, 6-4. In the third Gajjar, would get a break of serve to defeat Tcherveniachki, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Arkansas looks to rebound from this loss on Sunday, March 5 at 1 p.m. at the UA Outdoor Tennis Complex when it takes on the No. 21 Georgia Bulldogs.
