Arkansas Golfers Finish 8th at SEC Championshi

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Arkansas men’s golf team finished the 2005 SEC Golf Championships in eighth place Sunday afternoon on the 7,005-yard Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club with a three-round total of 905.
Freshman Eric Shriver finished tied for 10th individually with an overall total of 220 after firing a 6-over-par round of 76 in round three. Shriver shot rounds of 72 on both the first and second day of the tournament.
Kentucky won the SEC title with a 35-over-par total of 875 to edge second place Auburn by two strokes (877) on three windy days on the Seaside Course. Georgia finished third with a 43-over-par total of 883 with sixth-ranked Florida finishing fourth at 888.
The Razorbacks shot their best round of the tournament on Sunday with a 296 to move from 11th to eighth places. Arkansas shot rounds of 305 on Friday and 304 on Saturday.
Tennessee’s David Skinns recorded a 2-under-par 68 on Sunday to overtake Georgia’s Richard Scott for medalist honors. Skinns carded an even-par score of 210 for the three day event. Scott placed second with a one-over-par total of 211 after firing an even-par 70 in the final round.
Arkansas sophomore Matt Bortis turned in a strong final round with a 2-over 72 for a three-day total of 224 and a tie for 18th place. He carded a 75 in the opening round and came back with a 77 in round two.
Scotty Campbell came from the back of the pack on the final two days for a respectable 35th-place finish. He closed the event with Arkansas’ best individual round of the tournament, firing a 1-over-par 71 on Sunday to finish with a three-round score of 228. Campbell opened the SEC Championships with an 81, but shot a 76 in round two.
Beau Glover carded a round of 77 on Sunday for a tournament total of 237 to finish in a tie for 51st. Barrett Lais shot a 243 for the championships.
The Razorbacks are off until the Central Regionals begin on May 19-21 in South Bend, Ind.
