2008 GYMNASTICS FACT SHEET #3 – No. 12 PENN STATE
Arkansas hosts No. 12 Penn State Friday
The Gym’Backs continue their two-meet home stand hosting No. 12 Penn State. It is the third time in program history the Nittany Lions have competed in Barnhill and the visitors have a 1-2 series advantage over the Gym’Backs. Arkansas’ lone win came at State College last year.
Arkansas showed some nerves in front of the home crowd and got out to a slow start. But the Gym’Backs rebounded with mid-season beam and floor performances and out-scored the visiting Tigers 98.15-97.925 on the final two events. Senior Emily Peacock tied for the bars win while junior Alexandra LaChance and sophomore Casey Jo Magee tied for the win on the balance beam.
Arkansas ranked 10th this week
The Gym’Backs’ back-to-back 195-plus meet scores keep the team in the top 10 again this week at No. 10 in the country. This week’s rankings are based on an average score. The Gym’Backs’ 195.275 average is good enough for 10th in the country and fifth in the Southeastern Conference.
Fifth in the SEC?
That’s right. Arkansas is 10th in the nation and fifth in the SEC facing what is again the best teams in the country in their own conference. This week Florida holds the top spot and the Gators are ranked first on vault, fifth on bars and first on both the beam and floor. Georgia is No. 2 in the nation followed by No. 3 Alabama, No. 5 LSU, No. 10 Arkansas, No. 17 Auburn and No. 26 Kentucky this week.
