Arkansas Knocks Off Centenary, 10-1

SHREVEPORT, La. – Only two everyday players made an appearance in fifth-ranked Arkansas starting lineup on Tuesday night, but it didn’t appear to matter as the Razorbacks pounded out 10 hits in a 10-1 win over Centenary at Shehee Stadium.
A crowd of 885, mostly Razorback fans, turned out to see the Hogs improve to 19-2 on the season. The loss dropped Centenary to 8-12 on the year. With the win, the Arkansas tied Georgia Tech for the best winning percentage in the country at .905.
Clay Goodwin and Clint Arnold were the only regulars in the Hogs’ lineup. Arnold would lead the Razorbacks’ attack with four hits in six at bats. It marked the first Arkansas player to get four hits in a game this season.
“I played a lot of young guys and Knox McQorquodale got his first start,” Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn said. “Ben Tschepikow got a start and finally got his first hit. I had to get him mad. I told him ‘you are the only guy on the team that doesn’t have a hit, why don’t you go get you a batting average’.
Arkansas starting pitcher Josh Smith went four innings in a no decision. He allowed one hit and one run while walking two Gents. James Gilbert came on in relief to earn the win and improve to 3-0. He pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Lee Land would come on and pitch the final two innings.
Centenary starter Mike Clark (1-1) took the loss. He pitched seven innings and allowed nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits. Clark walked five and struck out six with four wild pitches.
“I thought it was a good gave overall,” Van Horn said. “It was a game we didn’t have to get all stressed out about after we jumped on them early. It was a good game for a guy like Arnold who got four hits and I thought Craig Gentry had an outstanding game.”
The Hogs sent 10 hitters to the plate in the first inning and scored four runs with the help of only two hits. Clint Arnold led off the game with a double down the left-field line and Craig Gentry followed with a single to left.
Clark provided the Razorbacks with all of the offense they would need. He hit two batters and walked three more including two bases loaded walks.
The Gents plated a run in the bottom half of the first inning on a RBI single by Justin Darr.
The Hogs extended the lead to 7-0 in the fifth inning with the help of two walks and a throwing error on the Gents right fielder Jonathan Colgin. John Marquardt drove in the only earned run for Arkansas with a RBI single.
Brock Bond tacked on another run in the sixth inning with a RBI ground out to second base scoring Clint Arnold who led off the inning with a single to right field. Bond finished with a career-best and game-high three RBI.
Arkansas and Centenary will wrap up their two-game series at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
