OPELIKA, Ala. – University of Arkansas junior Craig Lile shot an even-par 72 on Wednesday to tie for 40th after the first round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship.
A first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection and one of six players who qualified for the event as an individual, Lile carded a pair of 36s on the front and back nines at the par-72, 7,003-yard Lake Course at Grand National Golf Complex.
Lile trails tournament leader David Gossett of Texas by nine strokes. Gossett, the U.S. Amateur champion, tied an NCAA championship and course record with a nine-under par 63 to lead the 156-player field. Gossett helped Texas to a first-round total of 272 to lead the team competition.
The top 15 teams in the 30-team field and the top nine individuals not on those 15 teams will make the 36-hole cut after Thursday’s second round.
