The University of Arkansas baseball team opened its sixth trip to Omaha, Neb., with a 10-6 victory over No. 2 national seed Cal State Fullerton Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 23,549 at Rosenblatt Stadium.
With the win, the Razorbacks (40-22) advanced to take on the winner of tonight’s game against LSU (51-16) and Virginia (48-13-1) Monday, June 15 at 6 p.m. CT.
The win was the first for Arkansas in Omaha since a 7-3 victory against North Carolina in 1989 and the third in an opening game for the Razorbacks at the CWS in school history (1979 and 1985).
Freshman Zack Cox and sophomore Andy Wilkins provided the highlights. Cox had a two-run homer in the third, and an inning later Wilkins hit a three-run shot on a third-pitch fastball from reliever Tyler Pill to extend Arkansas’ lead to 9-2. Wilkins finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBI.
The Titans (47-15) added two runs in the bottom of the fifth before each team pushed across one in the eighth. Cal State Fullerton added one more in the ninth to make it 10-6.
Monday’s game will be aired on ESPN2 and can be heard on the Razorback Baseball Network from ISP with Chuck Barrett handling the play-by-play duties.
