Arkansas Sweeps Sterling in Home Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas’ tennis team blanked Sterling University on Wednesday at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center in route to a 9-0 victory against the team from Scotland. “Our team came out a little nervous at the beginning of the match today,” head coach Robert Cox said. “After a few games we got into the match, and calmed down. Sterling played us in a lot of close matches.” The Razorbacks started the match off strong by winning the first team point of the match at doubles. At the four spot, Arkansas teamed Talley Parker and Andrei Nicoara together to play Sterling’s Alistair Cernik and Stephen Wright. Parker and Nicoara would win in a close fought battle, 9-7. At number three doubles, Matt Roberts and Imraan Ismail took on Sterling’s Jamie Collett and Billy McNeil. Roberts and Ismail dominated from the beginning to win, 8-1. Number two doubles saw Arkansas’ Rohan Gajjar and Adrians Zguns taking on Sterling’s Matthew Lott and Gary Thomson. Gajjar and Zguns would win, 8-5. The number one doubles match had Nathan Price and newcomer Matt Simpson facing Sterling’s Alex Halsey and Colin Fleming. Price and Simpson would get down early, but recover to defeat Halsey and Fleming, 9-7. Arkansas would gain eight team points by completing a sweep in singles action. Adrians Zguns, No. 14 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, would take on Sterling’s Colin Fleming at number one singles. Zguns continued his winning ways from the fall by beating Fleming, 6-2, 6-4. Number two singles witnessed Nathan Price, No. 50 in the nation, defeat Matthew Lott, 6-2, 6-3. At three singles, Rohan Gajjar took on Alex Halsey. Gajjar won by defeating Halsey, 6-4, 6-2. Matt Simpson faced Jamie Collett at four singles. Simpson collected his first collegiate victory in singles play by the score of, 6-1, 6-1. Five singles had Arkansas’ Matt Roberts playing Sterling’s Gary Thomson. Roberts won easy by taking out Thomson, 6-2, 6-1. Imraan Ismail faced Billy McNeil at six singles. Ismail quickly took the match, 6-3, 6-0. Number seven singles pitted Arkansas’ Talley Parker against Alistair Cernik. Parker defeated Cernik, 6-0, 6-1. John Ewbank faced Sterling’s Stephen Wright. After a close first set Ewbank won, 7-6, 6-3. Arkansas’ next home match comes this Sunday, Jan. 25 against Nebraska. The Razorbacks also host the bi-annual alumni reunion Saturday morning starting at 8 a.m. with a special ceremony for Coach Pucci around noon. Singles: 1. #14 Adrians Zguns(AR) def.
