Arkansas Wins Fifth Straight With 9-3 Win Over

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Razorbacks broke open a one-run game with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cruise to a 9-3 victory over Oral Roberts Tuesday night at Baum Stadium.
With the win, Arkansas improved to 23-5 overall while ORU dropped to 13-11. The win was the fifth straight for the Razorbacks and eighth straight non-conference victory.
Scott Roehl (4-1) earned the win after pitching three innings of one-hit ball. Roehl struck out two in the victory. Jon Richmond started and went three innings allowing two runs, unearned, on two hits with two strikeouts.
Boyd Goodner relieved Richmond in the fourth and surrendered one run, earned, on two hits with three strikeouts. Caton Hall pitched the ninth inning, retiring the side in order to end the game.
Sean Sorrow (2-1) took the loss for ORU after allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
ORU put two runs up in the top of the third inning after taking advantage of a pair of Arkansas errors. Kevin Lamb reached on a fielding error and then stole second. On the steal, catcher Brady Toops’ throw sailed into centerfield allowing Lamb to reach third. Ryan Welborn then singled to left to plate Lamb.
Welborn stole second and scored on a single by David Castillo to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Arkansas pulled within 2-1 when Ryan Fox hit a solo home run over the bullpen in left field. It was Fox’s third home run in his last four at bats, dating back to the Sunday Kentucky game, and his second straight at bat with a dinger.
With two outs in the fifth ORU struck again. Lamb took Goodner’s 1-2 pitch over the wall in left to push the ORU lead to 3-1.
Arkansas rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Toops singled and moved to second on a walk to Brett Hagedorn. Kirk McConnell then singled through the right side, his second hit of the night, to score Toops and cut the deficit to one run.
Hagedorn moved to third on the play and scored on a ground out to second by Scott Bridges. The Razorbacks took a one run lead on an RBI single to right by Wishy that plated Nick Pitts. Pitts doubled to left to begin the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bridges.
Leading 4-3, the Hogs broke the game open in the eighth as five runs crossed the plate. Toops singled and moved to third on a throwing error by the second baseman on a fielder’s choice by Hagedorn. McConnell then singled to left to plate Toops and move Hagedorn to second.
After a wild pitch moved each runner up a base, Pitts walked to load the bases. With the bases loaded and one out, Wishy doubled to right to score Hagedorn and McConnell and give the Hogs a 7-3 lead. Haas Pratt then singled to center to score Wishy and Pitts and give the Razorbacks the final 9-3 margin of victory.
Arkansas returns to action this weekend with a three-game series against the Georgia Bulldogs. Friday’s game is set for a 6:30 p.m. start.
