Noting the Razorbacks

The seventh inning did in No. 10 Arkansas this weekend at No. 13 Florida … two throwing errors on Friday and two more on Sunday turned what could have been a Razorback sweep in Gainesville into a series win for the Gators … the Hogs took a 3-1 lead into the seventh on Friday night with Nick Schmidt on the hill and two throwing errors later trailed 4-3 and ended up losing 6-3 … on Saturday Arkansas received an outstanding performance on the mound from Trey Holloway … the senior left-hander made his first start in almost two years and worked 5.1 innings, allowing just a Gavin Dickey two-run home run … Daryl Maday pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn his fifth save of the season … Sunday saw the Razorbacks take a 7-0 lead into the seventh inning … the bottom of the seventh inning proved costly again as a throwing error by Charley Boyce on the first batter of the inning and a throwing error on Blake Parker with two outs led to a five-run Gators’ seventh inning … only one of the five runs scored by Florida in the inning was earned … a Adam Davis three-run home run in the eight inning proved to be the difference … Craig Gentry, Danny Hamblin and James Ewing led the Hogs’ attack against UF … Gentry hit .500 while patrolling center field … he ripped four doubles and scored four runs … posted a .833 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage … swiped one base and laid down a sacrifice bunt … Hamblin hit .455 with a double, three RBI and two stolen bases … Ewing hit .400 with two RBI and three walks … The Hogs’ starters were solid all weekend … Nick Schmidt matched his career high with 11 strikeouts on Friday night, but throwing errors – one by Schmidt – cost the previously undefeated lefty his first loss of the season … Boyce worked six innings on Sunday, allowing three runs – one earned – but earned the no decision … he struck out two and did not walk a batter for the second straight outing … Shaun Seibert pitched well out of the bullpen on Friday … pitched 2.1-scoreless innings without allowing a hit … the Arkansas’ pitching staff surrendered six unearned runs at Florida.

Hitter of the Week Nominee

Craig Gentry

Senior

Van Buren, Ark./Fort Smith Christian High School

Razorbacks’ center fielder Craig Gentry did a little bit of everything in Gainesville over the weekend as the Hogs and Gators hooked up on the opening weekend of SEC play … Gentry hit .500 (6 for 12) against Florida with four doubles, four runs scored and a stolen base … Gentry then showed why he is considered one of the best outfielders in the SEC on Saturday in the bottom half of the first inning by robbing Florida All-American Matt LaPorta of a home run … he exploded high above the left-center field wall to pull in what would have been LaPorta’s third home run of the season … he doubled and stole a base on Friday night … along with the home run-saving catch on Saturday, Gentry went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored … on Sunday he sparked the Razorbacks’ offense with three hits in four at bats … used his speed to stretch what should have been two singles into two doubles … is the second Arkansas player this season to collected two doubles in a game.
