Notes (School Records, Career Highs, Season Highs, etc.): Sophomore pitcher Barrett Astin made three appearances out of the Razorback bullpen, picking up a pair of saves in five scoreless innings, while striking out 10 … Astin opened his week by throwing an inning in relief against BYU, retiring all three batters he faced with a pair of strikeouts … In Arkansas’ first game in the Houston College Classic, Astin threw two innings against Texas Tech to pick up his second save of the season … Astin struck out four Red Raiders and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings … Astin pitched out of trouble in the ninth against Texas Tech, striking out the side after allowing the first two runners of the inning to reach … In Sunday’s game against Texas, Astin retired all six batters he faced, striking out four, to record his third save of the season and second of the weekend … Entered with two on and nobody out in the eighth inning against the Longhorns and retired the next three batters he faced, including two by strikeout … In the ninth against Texas, Astin pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts … Astin has not allowed a run in 12 innings of work this season, giving up just two hits and striking out 18 … He is currently holding the opposition to an .054 batting average.
Team Notes: The fourth-ranked Arkansas baseball team finished the week with a 4-1 record, sweeping a midweek series from BYU and winning two of three games at the Houston College Classic over the weekend. The Razorbacks opened the weekend by defeating Texas Tech, 3-1. After a 4-1 loss to Houston on Saturday, Arkansas bounced back on Sunday with a 7-3 win over No. 21 Texas. Arkansas is now 11-2 overall on the season. As a team, Arkansas hit .268 on the week. Redshirt senior Tim Carver led the Razorbacks at the plate, hitting .438 (7-for-16) with a RBI and four runs scored. Carver had at least one hit in each game to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He also extended his reached base streak to 13 consecutive games. For the season, Carver leads Arkansas with a .444 batting average with nine RBI and a team-high seven stolen bases. Sophomore Jake Wise hit .333 in Arkansas’ five games, driving in a run and scoring once. Wise, a Houston native, went 4-for-10 during the Houston College Classic. Wise is batting .343 on the season with a homer and seven RBI. Sophomore Dominic Ficociello also hit .333 on the week with his first homer of the season and five RBI. Ficociello is currently hitting .383 with a homer and a team-high 13 RBI. Redshirt sophomore Jimmy Bosco went 6-for-12 in the five games last week, with a homer and four RBI. Bosco had a .563 on-base percentage and a .833 slugging percentage on the week. Bosco is hitting .400 with a homer and nine RBI in 2012. The Razorback pitching staff compiled a 4-1 record with two saves and a 1.43 ERA last week. Sophomore Barrett Astin pitched in three games out of the Arkansas bullpen and recorded a pair of saves while not allowing a run and striking out 10 in five innings. Astin picked up two saves over the weekend in the Houston College Classic. Astin has thrown 12 shutout innings this season, giving up just two hits and striking out 18 batters. Junior DJ Baxendale started two games on the week and picked up a pair of wins. Baxendale threw six innings, striking out five and allowing just two runs, only one of which were earned. Baxendale is now 4-0 on the season with a 2.12 ERA. Dating back to last season, Baxendale has won six straight starts and nine of his last 10 starts. Sophomore Ryne Stanek earned his third win of the season on Friday against Texas Tech, striking out a career-high seven and giving up just one run on six hits in seven innings of work. Stanek has now won five straight starts and is 3-0 on the season with a 1.59 ERA. Sophomore Brandon Moore pitched in two games, including one start, on the week and had a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA. Moore pitched 5.1 shutout innings, striking out three. Junior Cade Lynch made two appearances out of the bullpen and did not allow a run in 4.1 innings, striking out six. Lynch has pitched in five games on the season and has one save with a 1.46 ERA. Sophomore Colby Suggs had three shutout appearances, pitching two innings with two strikeouts. In six outings this season, Suggs has no record with a 1.69 ERA. Michael Gunn, Chris Oliver, Mark Reyes and Ty Wright each had one scoreless outing out of the bullpen. Arkansas opens its second 10-game homestand of the season on Friday as it hosts Binghamton in the first of a three-game series. The Razorbacks will play the Bearcats at 3:05 p.m. on Friday, 1:05 p.m. on Saturday and 12:05 p.m. on Sunday.
