Arkansas drops series opener to LSU

FAYETTEVILLE — LSU starting pitcher Aaron Nola allowed two runs in a complete-game performance while Sean McMullen hit a three-run home run to lift the second-ranked Tigers to a 6-2 win over No. 10 Arkansas in the series opener between the two teams on Friday night at Baum Stadium in front of a paid crowd of 10,167.The Tigers improve to 33-2 and 12-1 in the SEC, while Arkansas drops to 24-11 and 8-5 in league play.The series continues on Saturday with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. in a game that will be televised by Cox Sports TV. Arkansas will start junior right hander Ryne Stanek (3-2, 1.90), while LSU will counter with junior righty Ryan Eades (7-0, 1.30). Astin allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits and struck out five in 5.2 innings. Tyler Wright pitched well out of the bullpen, allowing an unearned run on no hits and striking out three in 2.2 innings. Trey Killian retired both of the batters he faced and had a strikeout.After a scoreless first four innings, LSU broke through with three runs in the top of the fifth. With runners on first and second and one down, McMullen sent the first pitch of his at bat over the wall in right field for a three-run homer to put the Tigers in front 3-0.LSU added two more runs in the top of the sixth as Ross chopped a two-out single up the middle to score two runs and make the score 5-0.Arkansas trimmed the lead to 5-2 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. After a two-out walk to Dominic Ficociello, Fisher lifted his second home run of the season over the boards in right-center field.LSU closed the scoring with a run in the ninth on a one-out sacrifice fly by Bregman to give the Tigers a 6-2 edge.Arkansas went in order in the bottom of the ninth as the Tigers completed the game one victory.
