Arkansas Golfers 11th After First Round of SEC Championships; Bortis Tied for 13th
SEA ISLAND, Ga. – Arkansas junior Matt Bortis is tied for 13th after the first round of the SEC Championships at the Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course on Friday. Bortis fired a 1-over-par 71 to lead the Razorbacks that sit in 11th place as a team at 15-over-par 295.
Top-ranked Georgia leads the team race after shooting a 4-under-par 276 in the opening round. The Bulldogs lead second-place Alabama (E, 280) by four strokes and third-place Florida (+5, 285) by nine strokes.
Two Georgia Bulldogs are atop the leader board with Brian Harman leading the way with a three-under-par 67. Chris Kirk is in a tie for second place with 2-under-par 68.
Borits opened his first round with three pars before running into trouble on No. 4 and No. 5. He bogeyed the par-four fourth hole and followed that with a double-bogey on the par-five fifth. Bortis would rebound with a birdie on No. 8 to finish his front side at 2-over-par 37.
The Springfield, Mo., settled into a grove on the back side with a 1-under-par 34. Bortis opened with a birdie on No. 10 and proceeded to par the final eight holes.
Sophomore Scotty Campbell also turned in a solid round with a 2-over-par 72. He is tied for 19th place headed into Saturday’s second round. The only blemishes on Campbell’s round were bogeys on No. 2 and No. 17, while recording 16 pars.
Eric Shriver is tied for 42nd position after a 5-over-par round of 75 on Friday. Senior Josh Farrell is close behind in a tie for 51st at 7-over-par 77, while Will Osborne fired an 8-over-par 78.
