FAYETTEVILLE – The Razorbacks women’s tennis team is back in the national rankings for the spring as they are ranked No. 22 in the country, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in their first poll of the spring semester earlier this month. This ranking is proof to the stellar fall season they had just a few months prior.
“These January rankings are a testament to the strong fall season that we had overall,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty, “and it certainly provides motivation as we begin dual match play.”
The team closed out their 2010 season at the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and advanced to the second round of play after defeating No. 42 Oklahoma in the Norman Regional by a score of 4-2. After being ousted by No. 16 Texas, the women finished the season ranked No. 22.
Arkansas is one of 10 SEC teams that made the first national poll of the year. The highest ranked team was Florida at the No. 2 spot, followed by Tennessee (#13), Georgia (#15), Ole Miss (#18), South Carolina (#21), Vanderbilt (#26), Auburn (#58), Alabama (#60), and LSU (#68).
Other polls that were released were the singles and doubles rankings. Senior Anouk Tigu will start the season ranked No. 26 in the nation in singles. Tigu spent the entire 2009-10 season ranked in singles with her highest ranking coming at No. 18. In doubles, the Razorback duo of sophomore Kelsey Sundaram and junior Kate Lukomskaya broke into the rankings at No. 35 in the nation, their first ranking as a team. Last season, Lukomskaya and Sundaram led the team in doubles wins with a record of 22-17 and will look to build on that this spring.
The women’s tennis team will kick off their spring season at the Virginia Winter Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. on January 15-17. This tournament is an individually scored event and features players from highly ranked teams including LSU, No. 25 Virginia, and No. 40 Utah. The teams first dual match is set to take place on Saturday, January 22 against North Texas with first serve scheduled for Noon at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
