Arkansas opens with strong first day at Mock Duals

Columbia, Mo. – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team made a strong opening in the first day of competition at the Missouri Mock Duals in Columbia, Missouri Friday.

The Lady Razorbacks went 10-3 on opening day, finishing 5-2 in singles and 5-1 in doubles, beginning with three doubles matches against Iowa State.

Senior Karina Ledaja and sophomore Maryori Franco netted their first win as a pair this fall with an 8-1 effort over Eve Soriano and Jill Palen. Freshmen duo Ela Kaluder and Aurelija Miseviciute won their fourth doubles match in a row as a pair with an 8-0 blanking of Danielle Uscincki and Chrissy Derouin.

Sophomore Audrey Bordeleau and freshman Rachel Wilhelm paired up for the first time on Friday with an 8-5 victory against Beth Churmel and Kara Hickey.

The Lady’Backs then split off for a set of mid-afternoon singles matches against Kansas State. Miseviciute cruised to victory the Wildcats’ Jessica Simosa, 6-0, 6-2 to remain an undefeated 5-0. Melissa Cornett won in straight sets against Fernanda Da Valle. The Lady’Back senior improves to 3-1 this fall with the 6-0, 6-3 win.

Kaluder moved to 5-0 this fall in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory over Viviana Yrureta while Ledaja won over Tereza Prochazkova, 7-5, 6-1.

After singles play, the Lady’Backs went back to doubles for three matches against the Missouri Tigers. Ledaja and Franco won again with an 8-4 win over Erika Josvena and Yelana Olshanskaya. Bordeleau won again, this time with Cornett, against Charlotte Bellis and Johns, 8-2.

“The weather played a part in making it a difficult day.” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “We handled the elements OK, but we are looking for better things in the rest of the weekend.”

Tomorrow’s action begins with early doubles against Kansas State followed by afternoon singles with Missouri. The Lady’Backs conclude tomorrow’s play with doubles against Iowa State.
