Arkansas punts Ducks at ITA Kick-Off Weekend
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The 14th-ranked University of Arkansas Razorback women’s tennis team started ITA Kick-Off Weekend in superior manner shutting out the No. 58 Oregon Ducks, 4-0, before a vibrant crowd at Dills Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday.
“Today’s match is what we hoped it would be,” said Razorback head coach Michael Hegarty. “Tomorrow we will be ready for a great showdown with Notre Dame.”
Arkansas (3-0) will host the 17th-ranked Fighting Irish (2-0) in a second-round match on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center.
The Razorbacks used their doubles play as a catalyst earning the point for their third-consecutive match. Seniors Aurelija Miseviciute and Ela Kaluder brushed off Oregon’s Claudia Hirt and Carmen Seremete, 8-2. Eighth-ranked Nanar Airapetian and Anouk Tigu provided the clincher, 8-2, over Stephanie Macfarlane and Pavlina Smatova.
Freshman Kate Lukomskaya put up a crooked number for the Hogs, 6-2, 6-0, over Siobhan Cavan, while Airapetian extended the lead to 3-0 getting past Macfarlane, 6-4, 6-2. Second-ranked Miseviciute defeated No. 107 Seremeta, 6-4, 6-1, to clinch another Razorback victory.
Arkansas cruised to an easy win over a top-notch opponent finishing 5-0 overall in matches on Saturday, but Hegarty was not surprised at his team’s quick win.
“I knew we were very potent to win at a lot of spots, so it was not a surprise we got the four points so quickly.”
Oregon will face No. 44 Pepperdine in a consolation match at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
