FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas swimming and diving team hosts its first dual meet of the 2012-13 season against the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Arkansas Natatorium.
“We have a 16-event program against Georgia, and in all of our events we have really strong people in every event,” head coach Sean Schimmel said.
Last season the Razorbacks finished with a 3-3 dual meet record and a 1-2 record in the Southeastern Conference. In 2011-12, the Lady Bulldogs finished the season with a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Georgia is coming off a 176-115 win over Georgia Tech on Wednesday, while Arkansas took first place in the Razorback Relays with 526 points, downing North Texas, Vanderbilt, SMU and Missouri State.
“We are very excited about Georgia coming in and what that presents to us,” Schimmel said. “What it does for us is it gives us the opportunity to step up and see where we are in the middle of October with our training and keeping our workload up."
The meeting is the fifth time the Razorbacks have faced the Lady Bulldogs in the regular season. The Razorbacks are looking for the program’s first-ever win against the Lady Bulldogs, as Georgia holds the series, 4-0. The last time the Lady Bulldogs and Razorbacks met in the pool was in the 2007-08 season where Arkansas fell to the Lady Bulldogs 168-127 in the first meet of the season.
Arkansas welcomes the return of two-time All-American swimmer Chelsea Franklin and NCAA qualifier, junior Nicole Menzel.
“I think it’s just all about preparation and seeing the work we’ve done over the last eight weeks show up,” Schimmel said. “We have done a lot of good work, and we want to see that show up in our performances now getting out of the training situation and into the competitive environment, which is different.”
Admission is free for all fans as the Razorbacks will Swim for the Cure in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The first 200 fans will receive pink Razorback wristbands courtesy of Mercy Hospitals and Academy Sports and Outdoors.
