ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 24 Razorback women’s tennis team faced some stiff competition on the first day of the Michigan Invite. Competing in seven singles matches and three doubles matches, the Razorbacks came up short in all ten matches on Saturday and will look to rebound on day two.
The Hogs, who faced players from No. 13 Georgia Tech in singles, were dropped in straight sets in all but one match. Sophomore Laurie Gingras took her match with Alex Anghelescu to the third frame after dropping the first set 6-0, but then bouncing back with a 6-4 second set win. Anghelescu finished the match with a 6-1 third set win, but the match would be the only bright spot for the Razorbacks, who saw six straight set losses.
"We started a little slower than we had hoped today," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "Full credit goes to Georgia Tech, who showed us a few things we can learn from and take with us as we go forward."
The women finished the day in doubles against players from No. 10 Michigan and, unfortunately, had much of the same results. The team of senior Kate Lukomskaya and freshman Catherine Parenteau had the closest match out of the three on Saturday with an 8-3 defeat at the hands of Kristen Dodge and Sarah Lee.
The Razorbacks will get their bounce back opportunity on Sunday as they will start play at noon with doubles against players from No. 27 Washington. Singles will then follow against players from Michigan.
