Arkansas tied for 19th

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The No. 41 University of Arkansas women’s golf team carded an opening round 314 at the Tiger/Wave Golf Classic at English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans, La., Friday.

Arkansas is tied for 19th overall in the 23-team field. Freshman Victoria Vela leads Arkansas and is tied for 47th overall with a first-round 77. Junior Kelli Shean is tied for 60th overall with a 78, followed by Corinna Rees who is tied for 72nd with 79. Senior Kristin Ingram is tied for 81st with 80 and senior Tiffany Phelps rounds out the Arkansas scores with an 85 and is tied for 116th.

“It was a tough day,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor. “I saw some really good things out of Victoria today. She’s a real fighter and very intense.

“We’re going to regroup and go out there Saturday and Sunday with a championship attitude,” Estes-Taylor continued. “We have to believe in ourselves and go out and try and do some of the little things better.”

Seventh-ranked Alabama is the first-day leader with a five-over 293 on the par 72, 6,132-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club course. SEC member and No. 20 LSU is second with 294, followed by No. 18 Virginia with 206 in third. Ole Miss is fourth with 300 and No. 35 North Carolina rounds out the top five with a 302.

The rest of the field includes No. 5 Purdue and No. 13 Vanderbilt tied for sixth with 303, No. 28 Tulane, No. 47 Furman, No. 27 TCU, No. 2 Auburn and No. 16 Tennessee tied for eighth with 305, North Carolina State in 13th with 306, No. 17 Georgia in 14th with 307, Kentucky in 15th with 308, No. 46 Notre Dame in 16th with 310, the College of Charleston and No. 26 Louisville tied for 17th with 313, Arkansas and No. 10 Wake Forest tied for 19th with 314, Mississippi State in 21st with 320, UCF in 22nd with 321 and UNC-Wilmington in 23rd with 322.
