Arkansas tops Evangel 7-1

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas softball team defeated Evangel University by a score of 7 – 1 Friday at Bogle Park. Arkansas head coach Mike Larabee was happy with the first win of the 2012 fall season. “It was awesome,” coach Larabee said. “I thought we got out to a really good start. We played a lot of younger kids today. I thought in the latter innings we got our bats moving well. It felt good to get that first win.” After a scoreless game through two and a half innings, Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year Devon Wallace started her sophomore year with a bang, doubling off the wall in right field and scoring on an Amanda Geile sacrifice fly. Arkansas added another run in the fourth as freshman Claire Clark of Wynne, Ark. singled to start the inning and scored but Evangel answered in the fifth with a run of their own, making the score 2-1 Arkansas. The Hogs fought back in the bottom of the fifth as junior Jeniffer Rambo belted a two-run blast over the right field wall, making the score 4-1. Amanda Geile scored on the play. Devon Wallace would continue her night at the plate with a two-run single in the sixth, breaking the game open and giving Arkansas a 6-1 lead. The Hogs would add one more run as pinch runner Chloe Oprzedek scored on a wild pitch. The Razorbacks were paced on the mound by freshman Kelly Young of Madison, Miss. The Mississippi High School Gatorade Player of the Year struck out seven and allowed three hits and one earned run in five innings. Also pitching in the game for the Razorbacks was sophomore Kimmy Beasley. The SEC All-Freshman performer struck out five of the six batters she faced to end the game. Beasley did not allow a hit. “I thought Kelly pitched well,” coach Larabee said. “She fell behind with a lot of batters but she got some big outs when we needed them. She battled hard in her first start at Arkansas.” The Razorbacks will continue their fall schedule tomorrow vs. Marion Military Institute at noon. The game will take place at Bogle Park and admission is free to all fans. — ArkansasRazorbacks.com || On Twitter @RazorbackSB || Facebook.com/RazorbackSB —
