Arkansas tops No. 1 Florida

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas recorded its best score of the season and the No. 15 Razorbacks knocked off No. 1 Florida in Barnhill Arena on Friday, 196.70-196.10, earning at least a tie for the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship.

The win over the No. 1 Gators is the second for Arkansas in the last three years. In 2009, the last time Florida visited Fayetteville, the Gators were No. 1 and Arkansas recorded a 196.375-195.425.

Arkansas’ 196.70 is the eighth-best score in school history.

The Razorbacks improved to 5-3 overall and 5-1 in the SEC. Florida lost for the first time, falling to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in the league. With the win, Arkansas clinched at least a tie for the SEC regular-season championship.

"We had a lot of energy and we performed confidently," co-head coach Rene Cook said. "We didn’t do any routines differently, we just did them better. We said before the meet that if they are going to beat us, they will have to earn it."

Junior All-American Jaime Pisani won the all-around title with a 39.60. She also won beam with a 9.875, and tied for the vault title with a 9.925 and the floor title with a 9.90.

"Jaime was phenomenal," Cook said. "It’s amazing how much better she keeps getting."

Arkansas opened the meet with a season-high 49.25 on vault and led the meet as Florida posted a 49.20 on bars.

Pisani and Michelle Stout led the team with a 9.925 and a 9.90, respectively, both season highs. Katherine Grable had a season-best 9.875, Jordan Salsberg a season-high tying 9.80, and Kelci Lewis and Scarlett Williams a 9.75.

Florida was led by Mackenzie Caquatto’s 9.925.

Arkansas followed with a season-high 49.20 on bars, but Florida had a 49.375 on vault to move into the lead, 98.575-98.45.

Pisani had a 9.90, Stout a season-high 9.875, Genny Salvatore a season-high 9.85, Shelby Salmon a season-high tying 9.80, and Salsberg and Mariah Howdeshell a 9.775.

Florida had three 9.9s, led by Ashanee Dickerson’s 9.925.

In the third rotation, Arkansas had a season-high 49.10 on beam and Florida a 48.975 on floor.

Through three events, the teams were tied at 147.55-147.55.

Pisani led Arkansas with a career-best 9.875 on beam. Stacy Bartlett had a 9.85, Grable a 9.825, Howdeshell a 9.80 and Williams a 9.75.

For Florida, Dickerson had a 9.90.

In the final rotation, Florida had two falls on beam and was forced to count one, finishing with a 48.55. Arkansas countered with a 49.15 on floor to win the meet.

Pisani had a 9.90, followed by Grable with a 9.875, Kelci Lewis and Bailee Zumwalde with a 9.80 and Salsberg a 9.775.

Florida was led by Randy Stageberg and Elizabeth Mahlich with a 9.85.

Arkansas competes again on Sunday at No. 45 Illinois-Chicago and closes its home schedule on Friday at 7 p.m. in Barnhill Arena against West Virginia.
