FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas softball team, currently 19-18 in its 2012 campaign and 3-14 in Southeastern Conference play, heads to Lexington, Ky., to play a mid-week conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 3/ 5 p.m. against Kentucky."We need to carry the momentum from our last game against Mississippi State into the doubleheader against Kentucky," says head coach Mike Larabee. "We need to play solid defense, have good pitching and come out with some timely hits to come away with two victories in Lexington."The Razorbacks are coming off a weekend series where they hosted Mississippi State. Arkansas won the final matchup of the weekend 13-2 in five innings after catcher Jayme Gee hit her first home run and grand slam of her career to win the game in walk-off fashion. Arkansas is led by sophomore shortstop Clarisa Navarro, who averaged .556 in the series against Mississippi State, bringing her overall 2012 batting average to .367. Navarro has recorded 44 hits, five being home runs, 19 RBI and has a slugging percentage of .583.Junior Chelsea Cohen has recorded 152.2 innings in the circle with a 12-12 record. She has started 22 games, appearing in 31 of the 37 while recording 76 strikeouts. Kentucky has an overall record of 18-21 and 5-7 in the SEC. The Wildcats took on South Carolina last weekend in Lexington where they took the series 2-1 after falling in the first meeting on Friday. Kentucky is led at the plate by junior Kara Dill who is averaging .398. The Wildcats also have a duo of senior pitchers in Chanda Bell and Rachel Riley who combine for 178.2 innings pitched, with Bell collecting 117 strikeouts. "Kentucky was in the Super Regional last year," says Larabee. "They are going to be a very tough foe for us, so we are going to have to come ready to play."
This will be the 42nd and 43rd meeting between the two programs with Arkansas leading the series 26-15. The last meeting was a doubleheader last March in Fayetteville where Kentucky took both games 4-0 and 7-2 in 11 innings.
