Arkansas welcomes Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas softball team returns home to welcome Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to Lady’Back Yard for a three-game set on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s game is slated for 6 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

“This weekend is going to be a chance to step out of conference and play at home,” said head coach Jamie Pinkerton. “I’d like to give Katy (Henry), Miranda (Dixon) and Kim (Jones) a chance to get a start. We want to really zero in on defense, but we need to play solid ball, keep focused, make plays and execute.”

The Lady Razorbacks (25-17) completed those tasks on Wednesday in Sherwood, Ark., shutting out Louisiana-Monroe two straight games. Henry (10 K’s) and Dixon (12 K’s) combined for 22 strikeouts in 3-0 and 6-0 wins. Arkansas tallied 16 hits in the two contests and added three home runs to their season-record count of 41.

Junior Kayla Johnson hit two long balls and sophomore Sandra Smith launched her 10th of the season. Smith holds the season record for most home runs. Senior Dayna Huckabee moved into sole possession of the career triple record after she laced the 11th of her career on Wednesday.

The Islanders enter the weekend with a 14-20 record and split their last doubleheader with Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday. They are led by Lauren Sanders who has a .327 batting average, 34 hits, two triples and 20 runs.

The Lady’Backs are 0-2 against the Islanders having played them in 2003 and 2005.
