Arkansas Women's Golf Fact Sheet #5

Spring has SprungAfter along winter’s nap, the Razorback women’s golf team is ready to return to the links. Arkansas opens the five-event spring regular season traveling to LSU for the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La., March 13-15, on the University Club Course.
About the EventThis year’s event is scheduled to have the University Club play 6,511 yards and is a par 72 course. Arkansas did not participant in last year’s event which was won by Florida State with a plus-20 854. Arkansas’ last regular season appearance came in 2000 when they finished fourth with a 956. This is the 10th event the University Club has hosted for the LSU women’s golf team.
Making the tripArkansas has been pretty steady in the traveling five and does not change this week. The Razorbacks travel lone senior Lucy Nunn, juniors Kristin Ingram and Alex Schulte, sophomore Kelli Shean and freshman Katy Nugent. Nugent was the top qualifier this week followed by Nunn, Shean, Ingram and Schulte.
Arkansas at the LSU/ClevelandArkansas has competed five times during the regular season at LSU. In fact, the Razorbacks made five consecutive spring appearances at the LSU Fairwood Invitational in the first five seasons of the program (March 1996-April 2000). Arkansas has also competed at this course in 2004 at the SEC Championships finishing ninth with a 909.
Freshman leads the wayRazorback freshman Kelli Shean leads the team this year and is ranked 11th in the SEC with a 74.42 stroke average through 12 rounds. Senior Lucy Nunn is close behind ranking 12th in the SEC and second on the team with a 74.92 average.
Ingram closes strongJunior Kristin Ingram closed the fall strong posting a career-best tie for fifth place overall at Stanford. She shot a career low 211 and was two-under for the event. Ingram ranks 14th in the SEC as the spring begins with a career-best 75.08 stroke average this fall.
This year’s fieldSince the U-Club opened, the course has also hosted two NCAA Regional events in 2002 and 2007, along with the 2004 Southeastern Conference Women’s Championship. Again another stellar field is lined up to tackle the challenges of the U-Club. Joining the Lady Tigers will be Arkansas, College of Charleston, Colorado, Furman, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, South Carolina, TCU, Tulane, UNC-Wilmington, Virginia and Wake Forest.
Six SEC teams in attendanceArkansas is one of six SEC teams scheduled to compete at the LSU-hosted event. In addition to the Razorbacks and host Tigers, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and South Carolina are scheduled. Arkansas has faced 10 of the 11 other SEC teams this year and is meeting Mississippi State for the first time this season. This is the second meeting between Arkansas and LSU, Ole Miss, Kentucky and South Carolina.
Arkansas ranked No. 24 in spring coaches pollThe University of Arkansas women’s golf team begins the spring ranked 24th in the Golf World/NGCA Golf Coaches’ Poll. It is the first poll of the spring season – a season that the Razorbacks have yet to start. Sophomore Kelli Shean and senior Lucy Nunn emerged as the fall leaders for the four-event start to the season. Shean leads the team with a 74.42 stroke average followed closely by Nunn with a 74.92 average.
Arkansas versus the rest of the fieldThe Razorbacks have also faced seven other teams in this week’s field, and is 3-5 against them. Arkansas has wins over Furman and Tulane and has finished behind Louisville, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia. The Razorbacks split with Wake Forest in the fall.
