FAYETTEVILLE — In 2011, the Razorback Athletics will recognize the contributions of trailblazing Razorbacks who helped lead the way for thousands of African-American student-athletes at the University of Arkansas.
As part of the year-long celebration of the diversity and history of intercollegiate athletics at the University of Arkansas, Razorback Athletics will honor one student-athlete and their contributions to integrating their respective sport.
“We are honored to recognize these special individuals who helped change the course of the University of Arkansas,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long. “Through their efforts, thousands of student-athletes of all nationalities and races have had the opportunity to compete for the Razorbacks in many different sports. Although not all achieved tremendous athletic success during their collegiate careers, their contributions helped lay the ground work for the accomplishments of those who followed as well as the future success of the entire Razorback program.”
These trailblazing student-athletes will be invited back to the University of Arkansas campus to participate in a special ceremony honoring their contributions to the Razorback program. Recognitions of the trailblazers will be held during the respective sport seasons of each honoree.
The trailblazers will be featured in on ArkansasRazorbacks.com in February as part of the web site’s Black History month series. In addition, the series will also feature members of the academic community who have made meaningful contributions to the University of Arkansas.
