Auburn Knocks Off Razorbacks, 5-1

AUBURN, Ala. – Arkansas never got the offense going Friday night in a 5-1 loss at the hands of 21st-ranked Auburn at Plainsman Park.
The game was delay two hours and 46 minutes before the first pitch was thrown after rain moved in just prior to the scheduled 7 p.m. game time. The game was finally started at 9:46 p.m. and did not finish until 12:26 a.m.
The loss dropped the Razorbacks to 3-4 in SEC play and 21-5 overall. Auburn improves to 20-9 on the season and 4-3 in league play.
Arkansas starting pitcher Nick Schmidt took the loss – the first of his Razorback career – after giving up four runs on five hits and walking five. His record falls to 4-1 on the season.
Arnold Hughey picked up the win for the War Eagles to improve to 3-2 on the season. He allowed just four Arkansas hits and one unearned in six innings, while striking out 10 with no walks. Jon Madden came on to shut the door and the Hogs, earning his fifth save of the season.
The Razorback bats managed just four hits on the night with Scott Hode’s double of the left-field wall the only extra base hit. Clint Arnold, Jake Dugger and Brian Walker also collected singles for the Hogs.
Auburn’s nine-attack was led by catcher Josh Bell’s 3-for-5 performance that included two RBI. Karl Amonite also drove in two runs for the Tigers.
The Hogs loaded the bases in the first inning with no outs, but failed to score a run after Scott Hode and Clay Goodwin struck out and Danny Hamblin lined out to the shortstop.
An error by Hughey on John Marquardt’s come-backer led to the Razorbacks first run of the evening, as Clint Arnold lifted a sacrifice fly to right field two batters later.
Auburn took the lead in the third inning, 2-1, on a one-out single by Amonite. The Tigers had loaded the bases on two walks and a single by Tyler Johnstone.
Things got worse for Schmidt in the fourth inning as Bell ripped a two-out two-RBI double down the left-field line to extend the Tigers lead to 4-1.
The Tigers tacked on insurance run in the seventh inning on a RBI single to center off the bat of Adam Stacey.
The Razorbacks and Tigers will play the second game of this three-game series at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Junior right-handed pitcher Charley Boyce will get the start on the mound for the Razorbacks.
