FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The 21st-ranked Razorback women’s tennis team will finally return home this weekend for their first matches since the opening weekend to take on No. 37 Tulsa on Friday and No. 69 Texas Tech on Sunday. This weekend’s matches will be part of a big Razorback tennis weekend that will feature both men’s and women’s tennis matches on Friday and Sunday.
The women’s team is coming off its first loss of the season to No. 24 Oklahoma, but did get one win last week against No. 59 Oklahoma State, pushing its record to 5-1 on the season. Before the loss, the Razorabacks were on their third best start under current head coach Michael Hegarty and still have a lot of momentum as they head into tougher competition including the ITA National Indoors Championships next week.
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane have been a frequent opponent of the Razorbacks for the last few years. Most recently, the Hogs faced Tulsa just last year and came away with a close 4-3 victory. Overall, Arkansas has controlled the all-time series with Tulsa, holding a 21-2 record. This season, Tulsa has come out of the gates quickly to generate a 5-1 record with wins over Oral Roberts and Mississippi State. Their lone loss came at the hands of Texas A&M last weekend.
For Texas Tech, the Hogs have a 10-5 all-time record against the Red Raiders, but have not faced them since the ’96 season. In that match, the Hogs came away with an 8-1 victory. For this season, Texas Tech has a 4-1 record with wins over LSU, New Mexico and Tulane. Their one loss came against Alabama.
For the Razorbacks, even though most eyes have been on senior Anouk Tigu, who is ranked No. 26 in the nation in singles by ITA, and sophomore Claudine Paulson, who was named SEC Player of the Week last week, juniors Stephanie Roy and Emily Carbone have quietly compiled a strong start to their spring. Both players have an undefeated dual-match record with Roy at 6-0 and Carbone at 5-0. They will look to continue their streaks this weekend against the Golden Hurricane and Red Raiders.
The Razorbacks’ match against Tulsa is set to start on Friday at 11 a.m., while the Texas Tech match will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. All matches will be be played at the Dills Indoor Courts at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
