Balanced Effort Leads to Win at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Behind a trio of Razorbacks with double-digit kills and a .344 hitting percentage over the final two sets Sunday afternoon, the University of Arkansas volleyball team tallied a four-set road win over South Carolina. Redshirt senior Pilar Victoria and freshman Hailey Dirrigl each had 13 kills while freshman Elizabeth Pamphile tied her season high with 12 kills. With the result, Arkansas improves to 18-9 overall and 8-7 in SEC play.

The Razorbacks’ next match is Sunday, Nov. 19 at Missouri, the first meeting between the two programs this season. The match will begin at 3 p.m. (CT) and will be televised live on the SEC Network. Arkansas’ next home match is Nov. 22 when the team hosts No. 7 Kentucky at Barnhill Arena. Senior Day is scheduled for Nov. 25 against Auburn.

Trailing by one midway through the opening set, the Razorbacks won five of the next six points to take an 18-15 advantage on the scoreboard, capping the run with a block by Pamphile and Rachel Rippee. South Carolina (11-15, 4-10 SEC) pulled to within one but a Rippee kill and SC attack error kept Arkansas ahead, 20-17. On the team’s second set point, Logan Brown went down the line for her third kill of the frame to give her team the 1-0 match lead.

The match was tied at one set apiece after the home team won the second but the Razorbacks jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the fourth after Brown and Pamphile teamed up for a block. The Gamecocks rallied and eventually tied the score at 15-all after a service ace. From that point, Arkansas won 10 of the last 13 points including a four-point run and, on set point, a South Carolina attack landed out of bounds to secure a 2-1 advantage.

Victoria recorded back-to-back kills to start the fourth and the Razorbacks led 4-0 after a kill by Pamphile and a service ace by Rippee. South Carolina used its first timeout of the set after a Pamphile-Rippee block extended the lead to 10-5. Arkansas pushed its advantage to double digits at 21-11 before the home team put together a rally. The Gamecocks pulled to within 23-21 to force a timeout from head coach Jason Watson. However, two SC service errors handed Arkansas its eighth win of the conference season.
