Bargiachi honored for photography

FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas senior swimmer Gina Bargiachi is recognized for more than just her efforts in the pool. The senior art student was named as one of Six UA students to have photographs published in Best of College Photography 2011 this June.

Bargiachi along with five other Arkansas art/photography students were named finalists in the 31st Annual Student Photography Contest sponsored by Photographer’s Forum magazine and Nikon USA.

"Simply being selected a finalist for the contest was an honor," Bargiachi said, "but to have it published on the University homepage and the Razorback website is very humbling for me. This particular photo means a lot to be because it was a close family friend whose wedding my sister and I were in. I really liked the colors in the photo and the framing of it and thought it was a good overall concept for the contest."

The entry to contest was a requirement for her photography class in the fall of 2010 and Bargiachi said a new camera and great friend’s wedding was inspiration for the shot. Bargiachi also said part of her concept behind the particular photo was to highlight the connection between the bride and the flowers, which came from the bride’s family’s floral shop.

"You can see in the background one of the bridesmaids is helping Caitlin get ready, which seems to play into the family bonds as well," Bargiachi said.

The senior backstroke swimmer studies photography as her second concentration while pursuing a degree in art focusing on graphic design. She switched from pre-vet as a sophomore in order to pursue a career filled with art.

"My photography teacher is a lot like my swim coaches," Bargiachi said. "He has really pushed me to succeed. I really missed art and knew it was my passion so graphic design and art helped me find a way I could make money as an artist."

The magazine hosts the contest each year and awards the top-four places, honorable mentions and finalists from a pool of more than 900 collegiate participants. Each artist in the categories has their work published this June by Best in College Photography 2011.

Photographer’s Forum is a quarterly, award-winning magazine that is produced for emerging professional photographers.
