Beeks Selected by Boston in 12th Round of MLB Draft

FAYETTEVILLE – Junior left-handed pitcher Jalen Beeks was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.

Beeks, who was the 374th overall pick, is the third Arkansas player selected in the 2014 MLB Draft, joining Brian Anderson who was taken 76th overall by the Miami Marlins and Chris Oliver who was selected 112th overall by the Philadelphia Phillies.

A native of Prairie Grove, Ark., Beeks became a powerful left-handed starting pitcher for the Razorbacks in 2014, posting a 6-4 record and 1.98 earned run average. His ERA was the team best among starting pitchers, while his .213 batting average against also paced the starting rotation.

The junior allowed two runs or less in 11 of his 13 starts in 2014, and didn’t give up a runs in five of his outings. He earned a win over Bucknell at the NCAA Charlottesville Regional, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings and tying his career-high for strikeouts with nine.

Beeks earned two wins over ranked opponents this year, defeating No. 13 Mississippi State on the road with 8.0 scoreless innings, before turning around the following weekend and shutting down top-ranked South Carolina with a complete-game nine-strikeout performance to earn SEC Pitcher of the Week honors.

He is a 12-game winner for the Razorbacks, picking up six victories each of the last two seasons to post a 12-6 career mark.
