Benton, Gorlei In Top 5 At Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Arkansas sophomores Kaylee Benton and Cara Gorlei finished third and fourth, respectively, in the stroke play portion of play at the 45th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Georgia on Friday. The duo paced the No. 16 Razorbacks to a fourth place finish before teams begin match play on Saturday and Sunday.

Benton fired a 1-under 71 (34-37), just four shots back of the individual winner. Gorlei was one shot back of Benton with an even par 72 (37-35) in her second appearance at the event. It is the second top five finish for both Razorbacks.

The solid individual play propelled the Razorbacks into a fourth-place finish with a 16-over 304, one stroke out of a tie for second place in the 12-team field. Arkansas moves on to Red Bracket play facing Auburn in the first match on Saturday. The Tigers tied for fifth place shooting 310.

Senior Summar Roachell wrapped up stroke play tying for 27th over with a 7-over 79 (39-40) followed by junior Alan Uriell who carded a 10-over 82 (42-40) to tie for 43rd. Sophomore Maria Fassi rounded out the Arkansas scores with an 11-over 83 (40-43) to finish tied for 50th in stroke play.

“We definitely had a tough test of golf today with 20-30 mile per hour winds,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said. “It was a day of acceptance and trying to give yourself opportunities when you had the chance. I’m really proud of how Cara and Kaylee played today and it was great to have four of our five players birdie the final hole. We must now switch gears for match play and get ready for some fun competitive matches. We are looking forward to the next two days.”
