FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas women’s basketball team and head coach Tom Collen announced the signing of Calli Berna to a National Letter of Intent today.
Berna is a 5-10 point guide from Fayetteville (Ark.), High School. Berna is a two-time all-state and all-conference selection who has earned numerous all-tournament team honors. She has been a part of several winning teams and has won 72 consecutive games dating back to her ninth-grade season. She currently holds the single-season assist and steals record and is the all-time career assist and steals record-holder at Fayetteville High.
Berna has paced the Bulldogs to two conference tiles, a regional title and a state runner-up finish with her senior year to come.
Calli Elizabeth Berna is the younger of two children to Scott and Paula Bern of Fayetteville, Ark. Older brother, Colby, plays for the Razorback football team.
"Calli will be a special player for us in more ways than I can count," Collen said. "First, she is a terrific point guard. She has size, great vision and passing skills. She has good knowledge of the game and she can shoot it.
"She is the first local player we have had in our program for a long time and I know the fans from Fayetteville will love the opportunity to continue to watch her play," Collen added. "She was ranked among the nation’s top prep players. She could play anywhere in the country and we were fortunate to keep her hear at Arkansas. She exemplifies everything we want in a student athlete here at Arkansas. She is a great student, has high moral fiber and will be a great teammate."
Berna joins Joey Bailey and Jhasmin Bowen who signed Wednesday.
The Razorbacks return to the floor Friday, Nov. 12, hosting Florida A&M in an 11:30 a.m. contest.
