FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas women’s basketball junior guard Calli Berna was named to College Sports Madness‘ 2013-14 SEC Preseason All-Conference Third Team, as announced Wednesday.
A Fayetteville, Ark., native, Berna continued to excel on the court for the Razorbacks as a sophomore last season, leading the SEC in all games with 6.3 assists per game recording 208 helps in 33 games. Berna finished the year ranked ninth in the country with a2.4 assist/turnover ratio.
Berna finished the year ranked second in the SEC in minutes played, averaging 35.4 minutes per game. She played 53 minutes of a triple overtime road win at Alabama. Providing a defensive presence, Berna also finished tied for eighth in league play with 2.1 steals per game.
In SEC only games, Berna was again first averaging 6.2 assists per game with 99 dishes in 16 contests. She was tied for first in assist/turnover ratio with a 2.3 mark that included 99 assists to just 44 turnovers. Serving as the floor general for the Razorbacks, Berna ranked first in the SEC averaging 39.1 minutes per game.
As ajunior, Berna ranks 12th in career assists at Arkansas and already holds the single season assists records for both a season (208) and an SEC season (99).
The staff at College Sports Madness picked the top women’s basketball players from the SEC conference during its selection of all-league teams. Selected players are expected to make significant contributions to their teams during this coming season and deserve significant recognition.
