Better scores not enough for Gym'Backs

Jump to agate FAYETTEVILLE — The 15th-ranked University of Arkansas gymnastics team let one slip away with a non-conference loss to No. 32 Missouri in Barnhill Arena Sunday afternoon. The Gym’Backs posted better scores than in the previous two meets but the Tigers hit on their routines as well winning 196.050-195.575. "We had some little things that cost us today," said co-head coach Mark Cook. Sophomore Cassie Drew went in the all-around for Arkansas for the first time this season finishing second overall with junior Dana McQuillin on her heels in third. Arkansas opened with a 48.775 on vault paced by fifth and sixth place finishes from freshman Mallory Machnik and junior Audra Loveless. The Gym’Backs bettered themselves on bars with the third-best bar score of the year behind junior Melissa Leigh’s 9.850 to win the event. Freshman Emily Peacock added a 9.825 to finish third on bars for Arkansas. The Gym’Backs moved to beam where routines were solid scoring a 48.750 – a mark that closed the gap between Arkansas and the Tigers heading into the final rotation. Junior Katie Hardman scored a 9.850 on beam for a second-place showing for the Gym’Backs as they trailed the Tigers 146.975-146.525 with the floor remaining. Arkansas again answered the call with the best floor score of the season with a 49.050 in the final rotation. Freshman Mallory Machnik tied for the win on the event with the second 9.90 of her career but Missouri’s 48.900 on beam was enough for the Tigers to hang on to the lead. "We felt like we had some opportunities down the stretch but we didn’t quite come up with the scores we needed," said Cook. "You have to give Missouri credit as well. They competed well and got the scores they needed." Arkansas remains home hosting the final meet of the regular season Saturday, March 19. The Gym’Backs welcome No. 2 Nebraska, No. 5 UCLA and No. 11 Oregon State at 7:00 p.m. For more information and tickets please call the Lady Razorback Ticket Office at 57-LBACK or log on to LADYBACKS.COM.
